What's Cooking on 1060: Biblical Brewoff, and Old City Night Market
By Hadas Kuznits
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) -- It's a battle of the best brews, two thousaand years in the making!
Rabbi Eli Friedman says the "Biblical Brewoff" takes place on Saturday evening, May 10th, at Rodeph Shalom Synagogue, on North Broad Street.
Home brewers from the synagogue will go up against brewers from St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, in Roxborough, to see who makes the best beer.
Admission to the event is $30, and all are invited to attend.
"We have been working with St. Timothy's Episcopal in Roxborough, and we've been brewing with them for quite some time, doing sort of interfaith beer brewing," Friedman tells What's Cooking. "And we've decided to take our friendship to the next level, to see which religion is the best beer brewers."
Proceeds from the event will be divided among the competitors' charities of choice.
Rabbi Friedman adds that Rodeph Shalom has been working with The Food Trust for quite some time now, and says they're working together to host a weekly farmer's market on Sundays, starting in July.
"The farmer's market will be outside -- it will actually be right at the corner of Broad and Mt. Vernon, right where our synagogue is located, in the parking lot of our preschool," Friedman says. "And, working with the Food Trust, it's going to be a subsidized farmer's market that will accept SNAP and EBT cards and allow anyone from the neighborhood who's interested to be able to get fresh, local produce."

And speaking of The Food Trust, the first "Night Market" of the 2014 season kicks off Thursday evening, May 15th, in the Old City neighborhood centering around 3rd and Arch Streets.
"What we're going to see at the Old City Night Market is a lot of the Old City restaurants setting up in tents outside, serving up street eats," says Meghan Walsh, project coordinator of Night Market for the Food Trust.
