What's Cooking on 1060: Coffee For Foster Kids, Mexican Beach Food, and a Seder Preview

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --A new coffee shop with a community service orientation has opened in the Brewerytown section of Philadelphia.

The Monkey and The Elephant is located at 2831 West Girard Avenue.  The owner, Lisa Miccolis (top photo), says it is so much more than a place to get a cup of joe.

"We employ youth that have formerly been in the foster care system," she tells What's Cooking, "and the idea is to give them an opportunity to learn some job skills while also building their support network."

Buena Onda, the Garces Group's nineteenth restaurant, opens Monday, March 16th, in the Granary building, 1901 Callowhill Street.

Operations manager Andrew Skilton says the menu is inspired by the Baja peninsula and the Pacific Mexican beach:

"(The name) means 'good vibes,' and that's really what we're trying to capture here -- the Baja, the do-it-yourself beach vibe of the Baja peninsula in Mexico."

And the Gershman Y, at Broad and Pine Streets, hosts an international, pre-Passover seder on Sunday, March 15th.

Maxine Gaber, executive director of the Gershman Y, says the event is about Jewish food and culture around the world, as well as celebrating international freedom and cuisine.

"So this is pre-Passover, and we are exploring foods from around the world -- because Jews live all around the world," Gaber says.
