1 dead, 1 injured after West Philadelphia shooting leads to car crash into SEPTA bus

A 36-year-old man was killed, and a 17-year-old was injured and taken into custody after a shootout in West Philadelphia that led to a car crashing into a SEPTA bus Wednesday night, police said.

Police identified the 36-year-old man fatally shot as Terrell Jones of Philadelphia.

Police said the chain of events happened shortly after 10 p.m. at the intersection of 40th and Brown streets in the Mantua section of West Philly.

According to police, it began when two suspects entered a candy store and attempted to rob Jones. One of the men shot Jones and killed him, police said. But Jones returned fire on the suspects and struck a 17-year-old.

The 17-year-old and the other suspect fled in a blue vehicle and later collided with a SEPTA bus near 41st and Brown streets. The suspects then fled the scene on foot, but the 17-year-old was taken into custody with gunshot wounds to his arm and chest, police said.

The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334.
