3 teenagers shot in West Philadelphia, police say
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Three teenagers were shot in West Philadelphia Monday afternoon, police say.
The incident happened in the Overbrook section on the 1500 block of North Frazier Street at around 4 p.m.
A 16-year-old boy was shot five times. He was shot once in the right foot, three times in his left arm pit and once in the abdomen, authorities say. He was placed in extremely critical condition at Lankenau Medical Center, according to police.
A 13-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy were both shot in the abdomen, police say. They were both placed in stable condition.
A weapon was recovered, but there have been no apprehensions at this time.
The shooting happened near a handful of schools. It's unclear what led to the incident.
While responding to the triple shooting, a man was shot one block away, according to police.
A 45-year-old man was shot twice in his right leg and twice in his left leg on the 5500 block of Lansdowne Avenue, police say. He placed in stable condition.
Police say no arrests were made in that shooting and no weapons were recovered.
Sources say the two shootings are unrelated.
Jerry Jordan, the president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, released a statement about the shooting:
"Day after day, the scourge of gun violence continues to devastate our city. I am horrified and enraged that three children were shot in West Philadelphia this afternoon, leaving one child in extremely critical condition, and two others now reported in stable condition.
"My wholly insufficient thoughts are with the children injured this afternoon, with their families, with their friends, and with all who were impacted by today's shooting.
"Just last week, 15-year-old Neko Rivera was gunned down, a life senselessly stolen. His tragic death marked the seventeenth School District child murdered this school year. In the past month, we have decried shootings at the doorsteps of our school buildings-- a shooting right outside of Blaine Elementary, and two shootings where bullets pierced occupied school buildings--at both Heston and Willard Elementary.
"I've said it so many times before-- we cannot continue to live and die this way. Our children and our entire city need and deserve so much better. We need substantive gun reform and sustainable investments.
"Tonight my heart is heavy, but my resolve is only strengthened. We must do more and do better for our young people, for our city, and for our entire nation."
