Weight Loss Apps Can Help Kids Make Healthier Food Choices

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – There is now a high tech way to help kids shed unwanted pounds.

More parents are turning to weight loss apps to help their children lose weight.

The Sanchez family found an app that groups foods as either red, yellow or green.

The kids are taught to reduce the unhealthy "red" foods over time.

"I switched to smaller plates. I've switched to lighter cheese. You have to watch your portions a lot."

Registered dietitian Ann Dunaway Teh says, "Research has shown that by keeping track of your food and what you eat and drink, it makes you more mindful of it and makes you more able to lose weight."

If a child or family needs additional help, some apps also offer coaching, usually at a fee.
