Weather: Tracking A Clipper That Will Bring Snow To The Region
By Geoff Bansen
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- After a beautiful Delaware Valley sunrise, clouds have begun to overspread the region. Any remaining sunshine will be limited for the remainder of the day. On the plus side, temperatures will top out a bit above average, and won't be accompanied by the same sharp breeze we had Monday.
That being said, we turn our attention to tomorrow. An Alberta Clipper system will scoot across the northern portion of the United States over the next 36 hours, eventually finding its way here. Wednesday will start off cloudy, with precipitation confined to the second half of the day. It is expected to arrive later Wednesday afternoon and will be strictly an evening impact. We expect a general 1-2" in and around Philadelphia and points north. To the south and east, warmer air would allow for rain to mix in, primarily along coastal areas. This would inhibit snowfall totals, which would be limited to a coating to an inch. However, a prolonged delay in the arrival of this system could allow for colder air to set up, which would prevent any mixing and keep the precipitation snow for all areas. Combined with some intensification due to an onshore flow from the ocean, residents to the south and east could very well wind up with higher amounts than everyone else (2-3").
The timing will be a significant determining factor in this system, and the trend this morning is towards a slower arrival. At the moment it is looking like a late afternoon start time, lasting straight through the evening commute and evening hours, and ending before midnight.
