Weather: Severe Thunderstorms With Wind Gusts To 60mph Roll Through The Delaware Valley
By Steven Strouss
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Severe thunderstorms, with wind gusts to 60 mph, rolled through the Delaware Valley earlier this evening knocking down numerous trees and power lines. Hundreds of thousands of power outages have been reported across the region and crews are scrambling to clean up the mess left by the powerful storms.
Here are some peak wind gusts from this evening:
Norwood: 60 mph
Philadelphia: 59 mph
Burlington: 58 mph
Wilmington: 51 mph
Sewell: 50 mph
The potent cold front responsible for the severe weather tonight was fueled by 90 plus degree heat, plenty of moisture and an active jet streak which pushed the storms across the entire state of Pennsylvania in under 8 hours. Showers will linger in eastern NJ and southern DE before some clearing takes place overnight.
Wednesday will be hot again with a high of 90, meaning it's day 3 in the 90s for our 2nd heat wave of the summer. Scattered showers and storms will pop up Wednesday afternoon and gusty winds will again be a concern. Nicer weather returns through the end of the week as we head back to the 80s Thursday and Friday with lower humidity. The weekend will be nice with temperatures in the upper 80s with sunshine on Saturday and Sunday.
