Weather: Quiet Day As Storm Looms

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Go ahead, you can say it: The calm before the storm. Tuesday certainly will be; a dry, quiet day, featuring mainly clouds with a few breaks of sun. Temperatures will be comfortable; after already hitting our high of 59 earlier this morning, temperatures this afternoon will meddle in the mid to upper 50s. Hard to believe that we are expecting snow less than 24 hours from now.

Clouds will thicken up tonight, and then we focus in on the story for tomorrow. While this storm isn't going to be Armageddon, it will certainly be a strong nor'easter with significant winter weather implications. Oh yeah, and it happens to be impacting the Delaware Valley on the busiest travel day of the year!

Rain moves in from the south early Wednesday morning. The changeover to snow will take place from N to S through day, with the heaviest snow falling in the late afternoon/evening hours.

As of the present time, the forecast remains unchanged for the most part. We still expect the majority of snow up in the Poconos, 8"+. The Lehigh Valley, Berks, as far south as western Chester/Montgomery & Upper Bucks will see amounts in the 4-8" range. From there south towards Philadelphia, the adjacent suburbs, and nearby New Jersey suburbs, 2-4" is likely. Interior southern NJ and northern Delaware may see a coating to 2", with sleet mixing in. At the immediate coast of southern Delaware and New Jersey, little or no accumulation is expected, although heavy rain and gusty winds at the shore will certainly make for a nasty day.

This storm will be wrapping up during the evening and moves away Wednesday night well before midnight.

Winter Storm Warnings have now been issued for much of the Lehigh Valley, including Berks, Lehigh, and Western Chester, Montgomery, and Berks. Winter Storm Watches remain in effect for Eastern Chester/Montgomery/Berks . These advisories are in effect Wednesday morning until late Wednesday evening.

This is going to be a wet, heavy snow. Roadways will be hazardous, and accumulations further south will be messy and slushy. If you can avoid travel on Wednesday, you are certainly advised to do so.
