Weather: Temperatures Soar Into The 90's With Heat Index Values Reaching The Triple Digits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- July starts off with a bang across the Delaware Valley as temperatures soar into the 90's with heat index values reaching the triple digits - and as if the excessive heat and humidity weren't enough, we may have to deal with tropical trouble by the end of the week as potential Tropical Storm Arthur moves up the East Coast.
An area of disturbed weather off the Florida coast currently has an 80 percent chance of tropical development. There is also a slow-moving cold front cutting through the Midwest and that will advance on the region over the next few days. Ahead of this boundary, hot and moist air from the southwest will invade the area over the next two days. The front will stall overhead through week's end, tapping into increased moisture from the coastal storm. This means showers and thunderstorms, especially late Wednesday and Thursday, could be locally heavy.
And then focus shifts to the Fourth of July holiday on Friday. It looks like we may very well have a tropical system lurking well off the coast on Friday, meaning the shore especially could be dealing with some significant impacts like rip currents, rough surf and gusty winds. Depending on the movement of that system and the eastward push of the frontal boundary, we may still be dealing with showers and storms on Friday. The greatest likelihood of this will be in coastal areas. Hopefully we can dry out in time for fireworks Friday night but we'll keep an eye on the storm and keep you posted!
