Vandals Ruin Pee-Wee Football Field In Camden
CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- A pee-wee football field in Camden was destroyed by vandals earlier this week and now the team is scrambling to find a place to practice and play.
A hate sign was also painted on the field house.
Efforts are underway to repair the field, but it probably won't be ready this season.
Deep grooves and tire tracks from a 4x4, not chalk lines and yard markers, cover Union Field in Fairview. It's a muddy mess from endzone to endzone.
"I'm at a loss for words. This is a sad thing."
Rob Kelley is the coach of the Raiders, a team of more than 80 boys ages 5 to 14.
"They were totally upset. One of them started crying and said 'what are we going to do? Are we done?' I said no. We're going to make it happen."
Kelley says it breaks his heart because the boys need a safe place to play and stay out of trouble.
Camden County police spokesman Dan Keashen says the department is taking this investigation very seriously.
"This is an individual that has taken away a thriving area for kids to play in and rendered it useless right now."
Anyone with information on who might be responsible is asked to call investigators.
