Fire at apartment building near University of Delaware leaves more than 20 displaced, $1M in damage
NEWARK, Del. (CBS) -- A Newark, Delaware, apartment building was evacuated after a large fire broke out Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
At around 2:30 p.m., Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company in Newark responded to the Southgate Garden Apartments' building 18 on Marvin Drive for a report of a fire, Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Fox wrote in a news release.
The Southgate Garden Apartments are about a quarter mile from the University of Delaware, South Campus Athletic Complex.
Firefighters found smoke and flames billowing from the roof of building 18 after arriving, saying the fire quickly grew to a three-alarm, according to Fox. In a separate news release, Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company said they found an active fire burning in the building's attic space.
The fire was officially placed under control at 4:03 p.m., according to Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company.
No tenants or firefighters were injured, Fox said. However, more than 20 residents were displaced due to the blaze, and are now being assisted by the American Red Cross and the New Castle County Office of Emergency Management.
According to Fox, damage to the apartment building is estimated at over $1 million.
State fire marshal deputies and the ATF are still investigating what caused the fire, Fox said.
