Union Members Hold Rally To Push For Increase In Minimum Wage
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Union members rallied Saturday at the intersection of Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue with the message of raising the state's minimum wage.
Several hundred 32BJ Service Employees International Union members turned out for the "Fight for 15," a rally to try to get the minimum wage up to $15/hour:
"Fifteen dollars is really the difference between being working poor and being working class. It's the difference between needing two jobs and having one job so you can spend time with your family," said union vice president Gabe Morgan. "The root of many of the problems in the city and our country is that people can't provide for themselves and their families."
And Morgan says it's no coincidence they're holding this rally prior to the presidential election.
"We need elected leaders that actually care about what happens to workers," he said, "not as a slogan, but as doing the things that actually help workers' lives be better."
