Union Host D.C. United Tonight In Open Cup Round Of 16
By Matt Leon
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It is a return to U.S. Open Cup play tonight for the Philadelphia Union as they welcome D.C. United to Chester for a Round of 16 match.
The Union got here by outlasting the USL's Rochester Rhinos two weeks ago in penalty kicks. Philadelphia is capping off a busy stretch tonight. This will be their fifth match (two Open Cup, three MLS) in the last 15 days. After tonight the Union will get a bye week.
D.C. survived a scare in its last Open Cup match to advance, as they needed two extra-time goals to defeat the USL's Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 3-1.
These two teams have met twice in MLS action this season, splitting two match-ups, each team winning at home.
The U.S. Open Cup was good to the Union last year as they advanced all the way to the finals before losing to Seattle.
D.C. United won the U.S. Open Cup in 2013.
The winner of this match will visit the winner of New York Red Bulls and the New York Cosmos in the Quarterfinals.
