Twitter Changes App Store Category

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hoping to boost its visibility, Twitter has changed how it's categorized in the Apple App Store.

It now sits in the "news" category rather than "social networking."

The move shifts away from competitors like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, and others where Twitter was ranked 5th in the social networking category, to the news category where it is now #1.

Becoming a #1 ranked app could impact Twitter's overall ranking, which could give it better visibility in the App Store. It also puts the app in front of a different audience which could also boost downloads.

The changes come two days after it announced another quarter of sluggish user growth despite efforts to make the service friendlier with the addition of "Moments" and timeline changes. Twitter added 5 million new users, bringing it to 310 million active monthly users.

The company did not publicly announce the change and it is still listed under the Social Networking category on Google Play.
