Train Derailment In Port Richmond Under Investigation
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A minor train derailment caused a major traffic nightmare on a heavily traveled road in a Philadelphia neighborhood early Wednesday morning.
Edward Lawlor says, "The traffic was unheard of. I'm literally right down the street and it still took me an hour and a half to get here."
The derailment happened at about 3 a.m. on Aramingo Avenue at Castor Avenue in the city's Port Richmond section.
According to authorities, two CSX freight cars somehow jumped the tracks, which blocked traffic across Aramingo Avenue.
The freight cars were carrying acetone, which is a flammable liquid, but investigators said they did not leak.
Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson says, "We are going to be looking at all of the companies that move freight through the city of Philadelphia and make sure they are investing in their infrastructure."
He added, "It's important that we hold them accountable. It's important that they're responsible to the city of Philadelphia if they are doing business in our city."
There were no reports of any injuries.
The roadway was reopened about six hours later.
The incident remains under investigation.
