Toomey: Pres. Obama And Democrats Orchestrating Political Stalemate
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chris Stigall talked to Senator Pat Toomey on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about the gridlock in Washington and what he thinks needs to happen in order to reverse course.
Toomey claims that despite what he says, President Obama is not serious about cooperating with Republicans to get laws passed.
"It's frustrating and it's hard to work with someone who insists on insulting you and then telling the American people repeatedly -- I'll give him credit for candor on this -- that he intends to just plow on and do whatever he wants, whether or not Congress agrees…and then vilifies Congress if we don't simple agree to everything he wants," he said.
He believes the President and Democrats in the Senate are orchestrating a political stalemate to campaign against Republicans.
"It's pretty clever when you think about it. Have the Democratic-controlled body shut down the legislative process, close it off, and then blame the Republicans because they're in a more prominent position in the other body," Toomey stated.
But Toomey thinks everything could change in November if Republicans re-take the Senate.
"If we have control of the Senate, the Senate re-opens. We're back in business. On the first few days, I think we repeal the Medical Device Tax. We're going to send that to the President. What's he going to do? I don't know. If he vetoes it as he has threatened in the past, we'll override that veto. We'll send him approval of the Keystone Pipeline. What's he going to do? I don't know. I don't know if we could override the veto, but we should certainly give it a try. The point is the Senate would be back open for business. We'd have debates, we'll have legislation, we'll have amendments and we'll be able to send legislation to the President," he said.
