Thousands Pedal From Philly To AC To Raise Money For Kids, Families Of Fallen First Responders
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Thousands hopped on a bike in Center City Sunday morning and began pedaling their way 65 miles from Philadelphia to Atlantic City to raise money for children in need and families of fallen officers.
About 2,500 people rode their bikes from the Irish Pub at 20th and Walnut Streets to the Irish Pub in Atlantic City as part of the 29th Annual Tour de Shore.
The goal for this year was to raise a million dollars for the Irish Pub Children's Foundation. Some of the money goes to families of fallen officers.
"We're doing it for the children of fallen first responders all through the Delaware Valley," said Philadelphia Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan, President of the Board, "and additionally for a myriad of charities that benefit children."
And he says there's a sense of unity on the ride. Officers and firefighters, other first responders joining members of the community they serve.
This year's event was very timely after the attack in Dallas says Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele.
"Doing their duty, doing things to help others and unfortunately have tragically lost their lives," he said, "and we need to be out there to support them."
And Dave, part of Team Evesham, says this ride is his small part to honor those who protect his community.
"Most of us go into work everyday and don't think about the fact that we won't come home," he said. "These guys - it's always in the back of their mind."
