Thousands Complete 10K Run With Philly Flare
By Tim Jimenez
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A 10K run with a true Philly neighborhood feel is now in the books.
Four-thousand runners hit the city streets Sunday morning for the 2nd annual Philly 10K. The 6.2 mile course started at 8th and South Streets, then went through Passyunk, Graduate Hospital and Washington Square West before ending at 5th and Pine Streets.
Some experienced runners tell KYW Newsradio they were impressed with the energy and scenery:
"There are murals everywhere and paintings on the windows and people out on the stoops with their kids and dogs," says Amy from Philadelphia. ""I really like the narrow streets, there's tons to look at."
"I do races around the whole country all year long. I'm semi-retired and this race is right up on the top," 64-year-old Rudy from Bayville adds. He lives down the shore, but traveled to Philly for the run this late August weekend:
I'm glad to be here. Glad that the town is such a runner's town."
And his running partner, Marty, who just turned 60, says this is part of his fountain of youth:
"If you never stop running, you never grow old."
Street closures and rerouted buses caused more commotion than a typical Sunday morning, but Claudia, who lives in front of the finish line, is one of the many residents who welcomed the runners with open arms.
"It's actually a lot of fun," she says. "I love being in the city and waking up never knowing what's going to happen on a given day."
She says the only downside was the construction at 5 a.m. but says it's fine for just one morning.
