Top 5 Quotes From Chip Kelly's Hour-Long Interview

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Whether you love him or hate him, you've got to admit, Chip Kelly sure is entertaining.

Kelly, one of the most polarizing figures in sports right now, answered questions for an hour during an interview on Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings. As always, Kelly dazzled with his quick, sarcastic, and witty responses.

Here are Kelly's top-five quotes from the lengthy Q&A.

5. "Right now, DeMarco is five million dollars this year, Ryan [Mathews] is two million dollars this year, and I think Darren's [Sproles] 4.1 [million dollars]. So, all that adds up to less than 11.9 [million dollars]."

Kelly was pressed by the media on trading the Eagles' franchise rushing leader in LeSean McCoy. Kelly previously stated McCoy's cap figure was the primary reason for the trade, but after acquiring DeMarco Murray (5 years/$40 million/$21 million guaranteed) and Ryan Mathews (3Y/$11M/$5M G) some speculated Kelly just didn't like the way the shifty, home-run hitting McCoy ran.

The media insisted the money spent at running back, with Murray, Mathews, and Sproles now, is basically the same. Kelly explained why that's not actually the case. In terms of 2015 cap hits, the Eagles get Murray and Mathews for just $7 million. McCoy's 2015 cap hit, alone, was $11.9 million.

4. "I would say that it's probably easier for a quarterback with a knee injury than it is with a shoulder injury, as we went through the history of it."

Again, Kelly was pressed by the media on his decision to essentially trade Nick Foles for Sam Bradford, who is coming off of two ACL injuries. However, Foles isn't exactly made of steel either. Foles has never played a full NFL season (Bradford has played two), dealing with shoulder, hand, and head injuries. Kelly made a good point, stating that a knee injury isn't the worst kind of injury for a quarterback.

3. "Never gets you there. It took two first round picks to go from No. 6 to No. 2 two years ago."

This quote came during an exchange with reporter Sal Paolantonio. Kelly was continually pressed by Sal Pal about his desire to move up in the draft for Marcus Mariota, and Kelly finally gave in, asking Paolantonio to give him a hypothetical. Kelly schooled Sal Pal.

Chip Kelly: "What's it cost? Give me a number?"

Reporter: "Two first-round picks."

Chip Kelly: Where am I going? From where to where?"

Reporter: "[From No. 20] To No. 6."

Chip Kelly: "Never gets you there. It took two first round picks to go from No. 6 to No. 2 two years ago."

2.  "I thought Odell Beckham was the best player in the draft [last year]. The NFL draft hype is the most crazy thing in the world…silly season"

Beckham Jr. was the No. 12 overall pick last year to the Giants. Despite missing four games, Beckham Jr. still finished the season with 91 catches, 1,305 yards, 12 touchdowns, and the catch of the year. If Kelly is telling the truth, he was right.

1. "People used to think the world was flat, until that guy took a boat and didn't fall off the earth."

Chip Ship! He made a ship reference, how perfect is that? If you're not on board now, we don't want you!
