The Planet Mercury Orbits The Earth And Sun Today
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mercury orbits between Earth and the sun today, and it will be visible from Earth for the first time in 10 years, but only if you have the right equipment.
This astrological event presents two challenges for star-gazers.
Franklin Institute chief astronomer Derrick Pitts says first, you must have a telescope with at least 50 power magnification. More importantly, an appropriate filter is required for the front of the telescope to protect your eyes.
"You can't use smoked glass. You can't use over-exposed black and white film," Pitts said. "You can't use any home devices for this, any home concoction for this."
Mercury will be visible from 7:12 a.m. until 2:42 p.m.
"Mercury is some 66-millions away from the sun. But as we see it from Earth, it will appear as a small black dot," he said.
For those who don't have a telescope, you can watch online or at the Franklin Institute.
"We will have all the proper equipment set up for you to see the event."
