Terminix To Pay Millions To Delaware Family Poisoned By Pesticide
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- $87 million...
That's how much money Terminix will pay a Delaware family that continues to deal with serious health problems.
Steve Esmond, his wife Teresa Devine and their two teenage sons become seriously ill after staying at a luxury villa in the U.S. Virgin Islands in March 2015.
In the settlement, announced in an earnings report, Terminix will pay the amount to the family after the toxic chemical Methyl Bromide was used to spray for pests in a condo close to where the family was staying.
Devine is in good condition, but Esmond became paralyzed soon after the incident and their two sons can barely move according to a family attorney.
In March, the company admitted to using the banned pesticide in 14 locations, including the resort where the family got sick.
Methyl Bromide is an odorless gas that is used in farming and insect control in the U.S., but the Environmental Protection Agency banned its indoor use in 1984.
According to the EPA, high exposure to humans can cause central nervous system and respiratory system failures.
The company that owns the resort has already ended its contract with Terminix.
