Ten Of The World's Largest Car Makers Face Major Lawsuit
By Justin Udo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A law suit is in the works from consumers who say 10 of the world's largest car manufactures hid risks of carbon monoxide poisoning in more than 5 million vehicles equipped with keyless ignitions.
The suit claims the deaths of the 13 people happened as a result of the poisoning that could have been prevented if an inexpensive feature was added to the cars that would turn off unattended engines.
"This clearly shows that there are some unintended consequences," says Triple A's Jim Lardear, "There will continue to be other such issues about technology that gets incorporated into vehicles and how that really plays out with consumers that drive them.
Lardear says drivers must take certain precautions while driving these keyless ignitions cars.
"One way to do that is check the notification you see on the dashboard, in some cases you are able to just verify the vehicle is tuned off by opening the door and just making sure the dash and the radio have turned off."
BMW, Mercedes Benz, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors are just some of the car makers being sued.
