Temple University Honors Lewis Katz By Naming Medical School After Him

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University names its medical school for the late businessman and philanthropist Lewis Katz.

Temple trustees, alumni and friends and family of Lewis Katz gathered in the lobby of the medical school on Broad Street on Tuesday to celebrate the community contributions of a man who credited his Temple University experience as laying the foundation for his successful life.

Before he died in a plane crash more than a year ago, Katz donated $25 million to his alma mater.

His son, Drew, spoke at the medical school dedication ceremony and reflected on his father's legacy.

"For my dad, having his name on the building would have been nice. But what's amazing is having what the naming of the building represents and all of the people that his generosity will help."

At the conclusion of the event, Katz and his sister, Melissa, unveiled a portrait of their father that will hang in the lobby of the new Lewis Katz School of Medicine.
