Temple Offers $4K If Students Limit Outside Work
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Temple University hopes to help students graduate on time by offering grants if low-income students limit their outside work hours.
The $4,000-a-year grants will be available for students who agree not to work more than 10 hours a week in off-campus jobs.
Temple officials hope that students with more time can graduate in four years, and enter the professional workforce sooner.
Temple says that up to 500 incoming freshman from low-income and working-class families, or 7 percent of the class, will be eligible.
The grants will cover more than one-fourth of the cost of in-state tuition and fees.
Temple President Neil Theobald says the "Fly in 4" program announced Monday is also designed to reduce student debt.
