15-year-old shot 10 times, killed in Northeast Philadelphia: police
UPDATE: Philadelphia police identified the student Tuesday.
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A 15-year-old boy was shot 10 times and killed in Northeast Philadelphia on Monday. It happened on the 6100 block of Algon Avenue around noon.
Police say he was shot five times in the torso and five times in the leg. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:41 p.m.
"It looks like that individual was being chased down through the 6100 block of Algon when he was shot," Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said.
Investigators are trying to find three gunmen.
School District of Philadelphia spokesperson Monique Braxton told CBS News Philadelphia the teen was a Kensington High School student.
He is the district's 17th student killed this school year. Braxton says 78 students have been shot this school year.
A source close to the investigation told CBS News Philadelphia the student shot had recently transferred from Samuel Fels to Kensington High School. That source adds he went to school Monday before being shot.
Nearby, administrators at Fels High placed its campus on lockdown and sent parents an automated message.
"This voicemail is to inform you that due to police activity in the vicinity of our school this afternoon Samuel Fels High School was put into lock in," the voicemail read.
Parents say the surrounding neighborhoods are too dangerous for kids to travel alone.
"If possible, pick your children up, pick em' up and be on time, so you can see them coming out," Caprese Long, a parent said. "It's just unsafe."
"This area is not good at all," Hoi Lay, another parent said. "He's kind of scared, he never takes the bus or walk home by himself. Every day we try to pick him up."
"To me, it's terrible with the gun violence that is going on," Long said.
Officials told CBS Philadelphia a fight happened Monday morning involving several people who should not have been at Fels High School.
Police will be checking security camera video in the neighborhood.
The school says they will have their prevention and intervention team at Fels and Kensington High Tuesday.
No arrests have been made and no weapons were recovered.
