Officials: Another Swastika Found On Swarthmore College Campus

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)—Swarthmore College officials say they are investigating another swastika found on their campus—this time inside a gender-neutral bathroom.

The discovery was made on Sunday, November 20, 2016, shortly after a vigil in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

"Coming at such a fraught time, it is particularly disturbing," said Swarthmore College Dean of Student Liz Braun. "We have taken it down, and we are heightening our vigilance at McCabe and across our campus. We are resolved to banish these acts of hatred from our campus."

The discovery comes as college officials continue their investigation into two September 1 incidents, when swastikas were found on the campus, one in the McCabe bathroom and one in the Crum Woods.

"We are doing everything in our power to identify the perpetrators. When they have been identified, they will be dealt with to the full extent of our powers at the College, and in the borough. But that is only the beginning," said Valerie Smith, President of Swarthmore College, following the September discovery.

Braun says these incidents will not define Swarthmore College, but rather strengthen and unify them to fight against the hatred.

"We know this action affects the entire community but also recognize that some groups on campus will be particularly impacted by these incidents," Braun  said. "To these groups we extend our unequivocal support, and we stand with you."

Anyone with any information on any of these incidents is asked to contact Public Safety or any member of the Bias Response Team.
