Survey: People Spending More On Halloween Costumes

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Halloween is big business, and a new survey reports teens and young adults are spending more money than last year on costumes.

The survey by the YPulse marketing firm indicates young adults are likely to spend about $15 more on costumes this year.

"I don't really set a budget," this shopper says.

According to the survey, the average costume this year costs about $72. Last year, it was around $58.

(Reporter) "How much are you looking to spend on a Halloween costume this year?"

(Costume Shopper) "Well, my initial goal was $150 but I found this, it's only $60 so that's a discount so I'm going for it."

Parents shopping at the Masquerade store on Columbus Boulevard tell KYW Newsradio times have changed:

"Growing up, we just had the mask with the little white string around it and a little plastic coverall and that was it. This year, they have shoes, wands and all the extras with it, so it's a lot."

"He's not going to college, he's gonna become Elvis for the night for $500."

"They always add on extra stuff, especially from the movies. They want every little trinket that they see in the movies to be sold; and the kids want them, so you gotta get 'em. That makes the full costume."

And some parents even say they want to join in the Halloween fun as well.
