Sunshine To Start The Weekend, But Rain Moves In

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's a clear and quiet morning in Philadelphia and all across the Delaware Valley. A weak cold front is approaching and will pass through later in the day, but the sunshine will be out today. Brisk winds will pick up as a result, and a few snow showers are possible to the north. High temperatures will near 40 degrees, but won't feel too much better as a result of that breeze.

Saturday will be more tranquil in terms of the wind, but it will be several degrees colder. The sunshine will again be out in full force, though.

The first half of the weekend presents no question marks, but the same cannot be said about the second half. A developing coastal low will approach from the south on Sunday as it rides up the eastern seaboard, coupled with a frontal boundary approaching from the west. Uncertainty lies in this forecast, but this is what the most recent indications point to.

The day will begin with cloudy skies, and temperatures will be milder, in the lower 40s. By the afternoon, rain will move in from the south, with the heaviest of the precipitation likely along the coast. As this system begins to depart, colder air approaching from the west will likely cause some snow to mix in with the rain.

Two things to keep in mind: A more progressive front coupled with a more westward coastal system could cause a better chance for snow to briefly take over. Should the coastal low stay further east, however, that would allow for nothing more than rain at the coast and drier conditions inland. There is a very small window of opportunity for these weather 'playmakers' as we like to call them, as is the case for most of these types of storms.
