Study: Eating More Whole Grains Could Save Your Life

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Looking to start 2015 off by eating healthy?

You might want to pick up some whole grains, such as oatmeal.

New long-term research out of Harvard's School of Public Health found that eating more whole grains was associated with a 9% reduced rate of mortality.

The study, which is published in JAMA Internal Medicine, looked at data from more than 74,000 women and more than 43,000 men who filled out questionnaires about their diet and health every two years between the mid-1980s and 2010.

In addition to the reduced overall mortality rate, the scientists found that eating more whole grains was also associated with an up to 15% lower rate of cardiovascular disease-related mortality.

Interestingly, the researchers didn't find any correlation between eating whole grains and cancer-related death.

"These results are in line with recommendations that promote increased whole grain consumption to facilitate disease prevention," the study's authors conclude.
