Study: E-cigarette Use Rising Rapidly Among Teens
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Electronic cigarette use among teens is rising rapidly.
A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics reports that 11 percent of teenagers now smoke e-cigarettes.
That's up from eight percent in 2012.
That's why New York Senator Charles Schumer is co-sponsoring a bill that would ban e-cig marketing campaigns that target children.
"E-cigarette companies are stepping over the line by marketing these products to kids and getting them hooked on smoking, and they're hoping that the federal government...turns a blind eye to what's happening," Schumer says.
A study in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics found that middle and high school students who smoke e-cigarettes are seven times more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes.
