Stretch Of Northeast Extension Set To Close For Widening Project
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Road work will shut down an 11-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension beginning at midnight Saturday.
The Turnpike Commission is closing northbound and southbound lanes of the Northeast Extension from midnight until 6 a.m. Sunday between the Mid-County interchange and the Lansdale exit.
"Our closure is necessary to protect motorists and workers during placement of steel beams on the ramp bridge that carries traffic to and from the Lansdale Interchange," says Turnpike spokeswoman Renee Colburn.
Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be located at the Lansdale, Mid-County and Fort Washington interchanges to help motorists navigate and detour around the effected area.
"Once it's all completed," Colburn says, "the traffic will be reopened to both interchanges."
The work is part of a major reconstruction project which will widen the highway from the current four lanes to six lanes.
