Stigall On VA Congressional Upset: Cantor Was 'Too Busy Being The Next Speaker Of The House'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – On Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Chris Stigall discussed the stunning upset of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to his primary challenger Dave Brat in Virginia's 7th Congressional District.

Stigall explained that there was no magic trick that Brat used to win this election. He worked hard by going out and convincing voters.

"Good old-fashioned shoe leather politics is what got it done for Brat last night. He went door to door and he knocked, with what little money he had, while Cantor turned his back on the residents of his district because he was too busy being the next Speaker of the House. He was too busy planning the next immigration reform in secret [and] shoving it down our throats," he said.

Stigall said that no one saw this coming -- not even those closest to the race.

"All the media folks thought this was done, that Cantor had it in the bag. He was releasing his internal polling that showed him up big time, double digits, 24 hours prior. He had outraised this guy Brat, like, 25 to one," Stigall stated.

Stigall said this should be a lesson to Republicans in Washington that disregarding the wishes of their voter base will have consequences.

"It can be done. That's the most important thing; second, the arrogance of establishment Republicans, assuming that it can't [be done]. You have D.C. Republicans that are so focused on guys like Brat and conservatives, like you and me, instead of taking the fight to Democrats. They're cutting secret deals with Obama on immigration. They're constantly poking a stick in the conservative base's eye," he commented.
