St. Joe's Women Pick Up Key Road Win At GW

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – It was a big win for the St. Joe's women's basketball team on Wednesday as they downed George Washington on the road, 75-69.

The Hawks led by as many as 16 in the first-half, and they led virtually the whole game. But GW rallied late, actually tied the game at 69, before the Hawks scored the game's final six points to grab the win.

"We came out really strong," St. Joe's head coach Cindy Griffin tells KYW Newsradio. "(GW) went on a couple runs and our kids stayed true to the fundamentals basically, defensively and offensively. The kids came up with some big shots and we got some great stops down the stretch."

Erin Shields led the way for the Hawks with 21 points (on 6 of 9 shooting) and seven assists and Griffin says the senior guard is a real key to success for this team.

"She's really advanced her game," Griffin says. "She's not just a three-point shooter. She can score off the dribble, she can score off going to the basket as well. So she's really become an all-around player at this level."

The win improves St. Joe's to 15-4. They are now 4-2 in the Atlantic 10.

The Hawks next game is Sunday at home against Dayton.
