Spring Snowstorm Moves Across The Delaware Valley

By Steven Strouss

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The calendar says Spring but this is a winter season that just won't end. Tonight snow continues to fall across eastern NJ & southern DE as a Nor'easter strengthens off the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for portions of Burlington and Atlantic counties in NJ overnight and a Winter Storm Warning has recently been issued for Kent and Sussex counties in DE. In the advisory area we expect 2-4" but snow may accumulate up to 6" in the warning area. In Philadelphia close to an inch will accumulate but amounts will be less than an inch north and west of the city.

As of 10pm here are some snow amounts across the region: North Cape May NJ 5.0", Harrington DE 4.5", Milford DE 4.0", Dover DE 4.0", Atlantic City NJ 1.3", Ambler PA 1.0", Allentown PA .8", Philadelphia PA .3"

The area of low pressure system responsible for this unwelcomed snow will bring blizzard conditions to parts of Massachusetts and eastern Maine. While we won't see anything like that, strong Northeast winds will develop as the storm departs and gusts could exceed 40 mph along the coast and 35 mph inland during the day on Wednesday. Bitter temperatures along with blustery winds will send wind chill values into the teens and twenties Wednesday morning so bundle up as you head out the door. Roads in the city and suburbs may be damp but could be slushy in the warning areas.

March is typically a very volatile month and this year is no exception. Coincidentally on this exact date last year (March 25, 2013), 1.1" of snow fell on the city of Philadelphia but that proved to be the last snowfall of the 2013 season.

Looking forward it is promising that this will be the last snow of this season as temperatures rise into the 60s by the weekend and we move into a milder pattern. Showers will move into the area Friday and Saturday but the beginning of next week looks great with near normal temperatures and much more sunshine.
