Spring Football Update: Delaware Blue Hens
By Matt Leon
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Delaware Blue Hens are looking to build off a 7-5 2013 campaign. They actually were very much in play for the post-season before losing their final three games of the season.
They are about a week and a half into their 2014 spring workouts, and the man in charge likes what he sees so far.
"I'm really excited," Delaware head coach Dave Brock tells KYW Newsradio. "We've had some really good practices. This past Saturday, we had a pretty spirited workout, bunch of tackling and some scrimmage situations. I thought the players responded really well. We're probably a little ahead defensively right now, we've got a lot of younger guys on the offensive line and a lot of experience back on defense. It was good to see guys flying around and I think the players are really doing a nice job this spring."
This is Brock's second spring at the helm and he talks about the dynamic in year two compared to year one.
"I think you see a little bit more peer accountability, I think you see a little bit more player leadership this spring," Brock says. "Whereas last spring it was really coaches driven, I think your seeing a little more of a player driven practice and some very competitive situations. We're doing a lot more competitive things this spring where there is a winner and a loser, there is a consequence. And I think the kids are enjoying it. And we get actually a pretty good crowd for practice so I think the people who come out and watch it enjoy it."
Brock really likes what he is seeing under center these days.
"The first guy that we were excited was practicing was Trent Hurley, our quarterback," Brock says. "He didn't practice at all last spring. So, to have him out there after having really a terrific year. Just looking at the confidence and the timing, he's got such a command of what we're doing offensively now, it really makes you feel good that we're in good hands offensively."
Hurley, who will be a senior this fall, is coming off a 2013 season that saw him complete 64% of his passes for 2,207 yards and 22 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions.
Delaware's Blue/White Spring Game is set for May 3rd at noon at Delaware Stadium. Prior to that the Blue Hens will take a practice on the road, working out at Milford High School in Delaware on Saturday, April 26th.
Delaware will open its 2014 season on Saturday August 30th at the University of Pittsburgh.
