South Jersey Officials Warning Area Residents About Scam Targeting Businesses

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) – Police in Gloucester County are investigating multiple scams in which an individual claims to be an employee of a gas company who is contacting local businesses and corporations.

Police in Logan Township say several different aliases have been used and the suspect(s), who says he or she is a representative of South Jersey Gas, has even offered to allow the victim to speak to a so-called supervisor via a three way call the suspect initiates.

The suspect also has access to the victim's account information, including their account numbers and dates and exact amounts of previous payments.

The suspect has reportedly tried to convince the customer there is a discrepancy within his/her account, and in each instance, he or she has been able to provide the targeted companies with accurate info on previous bill payments in order to facilitate the fraud.

South Jersey Gas is aware of the scam and says it will never request an immediate payment over the phone.

Anyone with any questions or information can contact me at the Logan Township Police Department (856) 467-0061.
