South Jersey Beaches May Limit Swimming If Oncoming Arthur Roils Surf Too Much

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- We're all hoping for good weather with the long holiday weekend approaching, but Tropical Storm Arthur presents a special threat along the South Jersey shore.
With seas of six to nine feet expected on Friday, even higher waves could be driven on shore, creating the danger of rip currents.
If that happens, Ocean City fire chief Chris Breunig says, there's a safety plan to be put in place for bathers.
"We won't allow them to go past waist deep. We won't allow them to go out beyond the breaks. We won't allow them to get themselves in danger, basically," he said today.
Breunig has three pieces of advice for swimmers:
- never go in at an unguarded beach;
- if conditions seem to exceed your skills, don't go in; and,
- never go in alone. Kids, especially, need an adult buddy.
