Social Media Today: Facebook's 4Q Surprise, News Reader App & Twitter Partners With CNN

Facebook posts most successful financial quarter.

Following a strong fourth quarter earnings report, Facebook stock opened above the $60 mark for the first time. The company generated more revenue from mobile ads in its 4th quarter than it generated from desktop and mobile ads combined the year before. Facebook also revealed that it now has 945 million active monthly users on mobile and is quickly approaching the one billion mark.

Facebook's gets a news reader app. 

Facebook has finally introduced a news reader app and it's called "Paper." The new app will display stories around specific interests and can be customized based on a variety of topics.  It also has a "Newsfeed" section, similar to one Facebook users are accustomed to, but with a new design. "Paper" will launch February 3rd for iPhone users.

Twitter has a new product partnership.

CNN and Twitter have unveiled a new tool to help journalists find news faster. "Dataminr for News" is designed to analyze tweets in real-time and identify potential breaking news while it's still in its early stages. It was developed in partnership with CNN, Twitter, and the social analytics company Dataminr.
