PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A young boy is recovering after he was shot in Philadelphia's Grays Ferry neighborhood.
The six-year-old is in stable condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Police say one gunshot was fired around 11:15 p.m. on Monday while about a dozen people were outside playing basketball in the neighborhood.
The six-year-old was hit in his left foot.
"We believe that the six-year-old child, as well as other, young children, as well as other teenagers, that were supervised by some young adults, were in the rear driveway, playing basketball, just having fun behind the house in the summertime, when they heard, from all witness accounts, one gunshot," says Chief Inspector Scott Small. "Next thing you know, this six-year-old boy was shot in the foot."
His family, realizing the child has been hit by a bullet, scrambled and took the boy to the hospital, where he received treatment.
Authorities say the bullet hit the little boy's toes, causing a fracture.
Police say witnesses report hearing between one and three gunshots. They observed a dark colored vehicle traveling in the driveway with no headlights on.
The incident remains under investigation.
