Sinkhole Develops Following Water Main Break In Northeast Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A giant sinkhole has opened in a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia.

Chopper 3 was over the scene of the water main break at Academy Road and Chalfont Drive.

Officials say an 8-inch main ruptured and caused the road to buckle around 6 a.m. Friday morning.

Officials say about 50 customers are without water.  Neighbors seem to be taking it in stride.

Kathleen Brown says, "This morning I was woken up by helicopters and flashing lights. I turn the water on, no water. Then I come out to this. I'm like 'oh no, not again!'"

Residents say this is the second sinkhole on their street in the last few weeks.

Water service has since been restored.

Water department officials are working to determine the cause.
