Police Identify Woman Struck, Killed In Cheltenham Township Hit-And-Run As Search For Driver Continues

CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- The search is on for a hit-and-run driver who took off after hitting and killing 30-year-old Shanna Hurdle in Cheltenham Township. Police say Hurdle, of Philadelphia, died at the scene. She was left lying in the street as the driver of the SUV kept going.

"That's heartless. Put it this way, they gotta live with that on their conscious and I hope they catch them," Cheltenham Township resident Earl Reese said.

Sympathy and heartbreak for the young woman who Cheltenham police say was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Sunday just before 8:15 p.m.

The violent crash happened at Cheltenham and Ogontz Avenues. Police say a 2020 white GMC Acadia hit Hurdle as she was crossing the street.

Police say the SUV never stopped and was last seen turning onto Upsal Street in Philadelphia.

"It's this way all the time," Reese said of the intersection.

Longtime residents in the area say crossing the busy intersection at Cheltenham and Ogontz Avenues requires a strategy as cars whiz by at a dizzying pace.

"You gotta look both ways and sometimes I'll just wait it out," Reese said.

Reese has lived in Cheltenham Township for 20 years and crosses here all the time. He knows the risk of navigating the bustling intersection.

A family friend says Hurdle had just gotten back from a family paintball trip before the hit-and-run crash Sunday night.

Police say the SUV has noticeable front-end and hood damage.

The crash remains under investigation. If you have any information on this vehicle or this crash, please call Cheltenham Police at (215) 885-1600.

CBS3's Natasha Brown and Kimberly Davis contributed to this report.
