SEPTA To Begin $55M Project to Replace Bridge Between Swarthmore and Wallingford Stations
By David Madden
SWARTHMORE, Pa. (CBS) -- Septa is getting ready to replace a 130-year-old span along the Media-Elwyn line, across the Crum Creek in Delaware County.
It's a two-year project that will cause some pain for hundreds of commuters down the line.
But for now, relax. Things won't change for riders until the summer of 2016, when shuttle buses will be used west of the Swarthmore station, according to Septa deputy general manager Jeff Knueppel.
"We've scheduled 12 weeks, but we're optimistic that it may even be a shorter time that our riders have to endure the busing," he tells KYW Newsradio.
Almost 1,700 riders per day could be affected.
The $55.5-million project begins early in the new year and will put a new bridge in place that will serve not just commuter trains but freight trains that run through the area.
