Secretary Of Homeland Security Makes Pitch For Reinstating City Cooperation On Immigration
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Illegal immigration was on the agenda when the Secretary of Homeland Security met with city officials and advocates at City Hall.
The Secretary hopes to persuade the city to cooperate with immigration enforcement.
Mayor Kenney's first act in office was to reinstate Philadelphia's sanctuary city status, rescinding Mayor Nutter's agreement to cooperate with federal officials in reporting the prison release dates of certain felons who are in the country illegally.
So, while Secretary Jeh Johnson was here discussing Democratic National Convention security, he also made a pitch for regaining city cooperation on illegal immigration and met separately with activists on the issue.
Philadelphia Immigrant Affairs director Miriam Enriquez says the meeting went well.
"I think it was just a really great gesture on the secretary's part to show that respect for Philadelphia to come here."
Enriquez says, though, she doesn't think either side was swayed.
