Second Charter School Shooting Suspect ID'd, Charged As Adult

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A second suspect in the shooting inside of a Philadelphia high school gymnasium that left two students injured has been charged.

The 17-year-old student, whose police have identified as Rai-Sheem Rockwell, surrendered to authorities around 1 p.m. Saturday at Northwest Detectives. He is being charged as an adult with aggravated assault and related offenses. He was arraigned Saturday night.

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday at Delaware Valley Charter High School in the 5200 block of Old York Road in Logan (See Related Story).

Police say an 18-year-old female student was shot in the arm. The same bullet then entered a 17-year-old male student's shoulder. Both victims were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Responding officers immediately secured the school and discovered that the suspects involved had run from the building.

A 15-year-old student was immediately taken into custody, but was later released and completely cleared by investigators. Another student turned himself in to police on Friday evening, but has since been released and was not charged.

Neither of the victims' gunshot wounds was considered life-threatening. The female victim was treated and released from the hospital. The male victim remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Sources say it appeared the shooting may have been an accident, perhaps a student showing off a gun when it went off.

In a statement, officials said the school will be open on Tuesday and classes will resume as regularly scheduled.

Rockwell's bail has been set at $500,000. His preliminary hearing will take place on February 6th and will be held in juvenile court.
