School District Removes Principal At George Washington High School
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In a school year that has seen a series of fights and violent incidents, the school district has removed the principal at George Washington High School.
After two and a half years at George Washington High, principal Gene Jones has been reassigned to a non-school location.
District spokesman Fernando Gallard says the move follows a year of student fights and assaults.
"The reason why we did the reassignment is to be able to reset the culture and the expectations at the school, given that this school year we have had a number of safety issues and incidents," Gallard said. "People pulling alarms, incidents outside of the school, the incident yesterday was of course, extremely serious. In light of all the things that were going on in the school, we felt it necessary to reassign the principal."
Including the attack of a teacher Monday that resulted in the arrest of two students.
Teachers union president Jerry Jordan in a statement said teachers and students there were working and learning "In unbearable circumstances."
Gallard says the district has assigned two co-principals to George Washington, where they will implement a new safety and culture plan.
