Saying Goodbye To Fallen Philadelphia Firefighter

By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Today was the final farewell for Joyce Craig - the firefighter who died on the job last week. Mayor Nutter has posthumously promoted the fallen hero to the rank of Lieutenant.

The flag draped coffin of firefighter Joyce Craig arrived aboard Engine 64 at the Batchelor Brothers funeral home in East Oak Lane Saturday morning. The family arrived with a police escort.

Firefighters from around the area and around the country came to pay their respects.

One of the neighbors who showed up to support firefighters said coming out to the remembrance was very important to her. "My daughter is in the Philadelphia Fire Cadets program."

Andrew Smack was among those who gathered to honor Craig. "She was a good friend of my wife's friend," he said. "I came out to pay my respects for the simple fact that she was Philadelphia, and at the end of the day I just had to come pay homage to a brave firefighter who risked her life to save another life. She'll always be honored in this city."

With bagpipes playing, Philadelphia said goodbye to its fallen firefighter, Lieutenant Joyce Craig.
