Rutgers-Camden Unveils Long-Range Expansion Plan

By David Madden

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Rutgers University today took the wraps off an ambitious 15-year expansion plan within the city of Camden.

Dubbed "Rutgers 2030," the plan aims to spread the school's footprint within Camden by one-third.

Much of it will center on what spokesman Mike Sepanic calls an envisioned "eds and meds" corridor.

"There's Rutgers-Camden, there's Cooper Hospital, there's Camden County College, there's Cooper Medical School," he explains. "There's a lot going on here in the city of Camden and, as all of our institutions grow, it makes a lot of sense for us to really be more connected to each other."

Plans also include additional dormitory space and parking garages to accommodate growth within the student body, now about 6,500.

Hopes are to build new homes for the business school as well as centers for science research and civic engagement.
