Rosemont's Liz Coyne Winding Down Dominant Career

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- There have been few women's college basketball players in this area who have enjoyed as dominant a career as that of Division III Rosemont College senior Liz Coyne.

A 5'10" forward, Coyne is averaging 20.1 points and 11.0 rebounds this season. She recently scored her 2,000th career point and pulled down her 1,000th career rebound and she is closing in on the Colonial States Athletic Conference all-time points record, needing 36 more to break it.

"It's been a lot of fun," Coyne tells KYW Newsradio.

Coyne started her college career strong, averaging 18.8 points a game as a freshman, and she has just gotten better and better. She came to Rosemont from Downingtown West High School and she says it was relatively late in high school that she really started to think that a college basketball career was a real possibility.

"Probably my senior year of high school I took it really seriously," Coyne says. "Because I came from a program where we were really, really good, so I didn't really get to start as much (during) my high school career until my senior year. So that's when I thought I was going to decide to play in college and take it really seriously."

Rosemont head coach Rayne Reber was an assistant for the Ravens when she worked to get Coyne on campus.

"When I was recruiting her I told her that she would score 1,000 points and be an All-American," Reber tells KYW Newsradio. "But I never imagined that it would be 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She's exceeded every expectation I've had for her and just been amazing to watch."

As far as Coyne's favorite part of the college basketball experience?

"I would say winning," Coyne says. "Even if I didn't have a good game, I always like to win. But I know when I have a good game and we end up winning, it means a lot to the team and me, my parents and everyone."

Coyne has enjoyed this success despite constantly being the focus of every team that Rosemont faces.

"Her senior year, almost every single play goes through her," Reber says. "Every offense we have has some form to get Liz Coyne open and to get Liz Coyne the ball. Everybody knows in the gym that we're getting the ball to Liz, but yet somehow we're still able to do it with the defense trying as hard as they can to not let her get the ball."

Rosemont is 10-11 this season and they are 6-6 in CSAC as they battle for a spot in the conference tournament.

The Ravens bring a three-game winning streak into Wednesday night's game at Keystone College.
