Road Crews Preparing For More Icy Conditions

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - PennDOT crews are bracing for more icy conditions on the roads though the overnight hours.

Workers have been out since late Saturday night in an effort to help keep the streets safe.

PennDOT officials say they treated the roads before freezing rain fell Sunday:

"There were icing areas that developed between 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning that caused a lot of the issues throughout the region," explains PennDOT's Gene Blaum, "but we did have trucks and we kept those trucks out throughout the morning until the early afternoon."

Blaum says they'll have nearly 200 trucks salting slick spots as they try to prevent ice from forming on the roads:

"The department of transportation will have trucks on patrol through Monday morning's rush hour to monitor the highways and to salt as necessary should any refreezing occur."

Blaum adds the best advice he can give to drivers is to pay attention, don't speed and keep a safe distance from the car in front of you.
