Retired NJ Teacher Charged With Abusing Student

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a retired teacher and another man have been charged with sexually abusing a teenager starting more than 10 years ago.

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said Thursday that 63-year-old Raymond Waters and 68-year-old Allen Harbatuk, both of Hillsborough, were charged with abusing the victim starting in 2002. Both men were being held in jail and it wasn't clear if either had attorneys.

Prosecutors say that Waters was the victim's art teacher in the student's freshman year of high school. The victim told prosecutors the abuse started then and continued for years.

Prosecutors say Waters, a former Boy Scout leader, introduced the victim to Harbatuk in 2003 when the victim worked at the Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation in Barnegat. Waters and Harbatuk are accused of abusing the victim there.
